Synthesis of Nanomaterials: Chemical and Physical Methods
Özet
Nanomaterials, typically defined as materials with at least one dimension in the 1–100 nm range, exhibit optical, electrical, mechanical, magnetic, and catalytic properties that differ markedly from those of their bulk counterparts. Because these properties depend strongly on size, morphology, and structure, the choice of synthesis route is decisive. This chapter first classifies nanomaterials by dimensionality (0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D). It then outlines the top-down and bottom-up approaches to their synthesis, noting hybrid techniques such as laser ablation, sputtering, and pulsed laser deposition. The chemical methods covered are sol–gel, hydrothermal and solvothermal synthesis, precipitation and co-precipitation, chemical vapor deposition, electrochemical synthesis, and spray pyrolysis. The physical methods covered are physical vapor deposition, pulsed laser deposition, laser ablation, ball milling, and electrospinning. For each method, the chapter discusses the underlying mechanism, representative reactions, key processing parameters, and its main advantages and limitations. It concludes by emphasizing the need for reproducible, scalable, energy-efficient, and environmentally sustainable synthesis strategies that allow precise control over nanomaterial properties.
