Functional Ligand Engineering in Ruthenium(II) Polypyridyl Complexes
Özet
Ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes have attracted considerable attention in coordination and photochemical research due to their favorable electronic and photophysical properties. Among the different ligand systems, bipyridine, phenanthroline, and dipyridophenazine (dppz) derivatives are widely used because their structures can be readily modified to control the properties of the resulting ruthenium complexes. This chapter reviews the role of ligand structure and functionalization in the development of ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes. The effects of different ligand architectures, substituents, π-conjugated units, and functional groups on the photophysical, electrochemical, and biological properties of these complexes are discussed. Particular attention is given to bipyridine- and phenanthroline-based systems, including their use in light harvesting, sensing, photocatalysis, DNA interaction, and photoactive materials. The contribution of extended dppz-type ligands to DNA recognition, light-switch behavior, and photoinduced processes is also described. Recent examples of polymer-supported and functionally modified ruthenium complexes are included to illustrate how ligand design can be combined with materials chemistry. Overall, the studies discussed in this chapter show that structural modification of established polypyridyl ligand platforms provides a practical approach for tuning the properties and applications of ruthenium(II) complexes.
